Editing is the polish applied to make your hard work shine.
You know better than to put something out into the world that isn’t your best. Putting another set of eyes on your message—your book, article, annual report—catches mistakes and elevates the piece, as well as your reputation.
Editing comes in several forms.
Copyediting focuses on inconsistencies, punctuation, grammar and flow.
Fact checking is just as it sounds. Today’s proliferation of misinformation requires all of us to be vigilant in using reputable information sources and in quoting them correctly.
Proofreading ensures your copy is free from spelling and punctuation errors.
Your work with a developmental editor brings your book concept to life.
Your message or publication is made better with the help of a careful editor.
What editing looks like
-
We ensure clients’ written materials are on point by highlighting discrepancies, making style corrections, and smoothing out the rough spots while maintaining the writer’s and client’s voice. The before-and-after of copyediting is hard to illustrate. It’s easier to say we’ve worked on copyediting for magazines, newspapers, nonprofit annual reports and communications campaigns, and more.
-
For those projects where you just want someone to check your commas and grammar and don’t want someone to comment on or correct for flow and content, you want a proofreader. You’ll find a faster turnaround than for copyediting with lighter comments. Ink & Soil collaborators have been proofreading newspaper articles and nonprofit materials for a couple decades.
-
Reputable publications run their content through fact checking every time. If you’re putting content into the world that relies on facts and data you’ve gleaned from outside your organization, you should do that, too.
